About

The reference directory for NZ car insurance

The mainstream NZ insurers, lined up with their cover shapes side by side, so a like-for-like comparison is actually possible. The directory points at the two or three worth quoting for a given situation — and is upfront about why.

Why this exists

Most NZ drivers compare car insurance on price alone. This directory exists to make like-for-like cover comparison possible. Aggregators quote precise dollar figures from incomplete data, then fall back to a broker hand-off when the real numbers come back different. Insurers themselves quote a number, then quietly hike it 12–18% at renewal. Brokers help — sometimes — but their incentives are tilted toward the policies that pay them more. The category needed a straight answer to "who should I go with"; this directory is it.

Listing standards

Listings must demonstrate meaningful presence in the NZ private-car market — active underwriting, a public NZ claims process, and product offerings that go beyond a single niche. That gives the standard mainstream set: AA Insurance, State, Tower, Trade Me Insurance, AMI, Vero, NZI, Cove. Rebadged distribution channels for one of the underlying eight are flagged as such on each insurer's page, in plain English, so the directory reflects who actually carries the risk.

Premium bands, not made-up quotes

The directory never publishes a precise dollar premium. Anyone who does without seeing a full driver, vehicle, and claims history is guessing. What's published are bands — ranges drawn from real, recent quotes for the profiles seen most often. The band is honest about how wide the spread is for a given demographic and region. For an exact number, the insurer's quote tool is two clicks away from every page on this site.
